dear boy o’ mine,
this past week has been so (especially) nostalgic for me with these three little pullets ‘round here…
‘cause i can still hear you calling out into the dusky meadow each night…
“heeeere…chick, chick, chick! heeeey…duck, duck, duck!”
wooing all those fowl to come in where they’d be safe after dark…
and i can still see (especially) those little heads pop right up out of all that tall grass…and hurry just as fast as their waddle would let them right towards your voice…
those funny little ducks all in their straight row…
don’t you just miss all those blacks, and goatie-goats, and dogs, and cats, and ducks, and chickens…and silly…your mama’s one goose?
don’t you?
don’t you just miss all the feeding…and the watering…and the mucking…and (especially) the sometimes having to track them all down over all that whole property?
don’t you?
yes…i’m just so sure that you do!
i’m just so sure you miss all of that!
and i (especially) do too!

– the “thank you” that boy o’ mine sent to his great-grampa bert for those four black angus (june 18, 2003)…and that boy, his first two girls…and his most favorite stick! (fall, 2001)
:: my littles are all out back eating their “bites”…and being drilled by their biggest sis on all of the spanish she’s managed to teach them so far…
and william just piped up with an all-too-serious, “emma, how do you scream in spanish?”
dear emma grace,
as you’ve been getting older…and spending more time in that bathroom…it’s got me to thinkin’…
and i just want to be sure that you know…
that i like your fashion “sense”…the way you mix and match your clothes…
and i like the shades and hues that you use…the mood they create on your face…
and i like the amazing things that you do with your hair…i was only ever barely able to get your one pony set straight!
but even more…i need to be sure that you know…
really to know…
that the you beneath all of those stitches to “define” and hues to “enhance”…
the you…He made…in His image…
the most immeasurably…exquisitely…beautiful One…
is the you i love most!
and nothing you do could ever truly improve upon what He thought to be already perfect…
His placing this right there…and that just so…
just the way He thought you most…best…
and it’s really your sweetness…and compassion…and grace…that truly enhance and amaze and draw others to you…
only all the deep-beneath-the-skin stuff that’s truly most beautiful…
and it’s all that true inner “pretty” that’s sure to peek out…through the simplest of embellishments, really…
that beautiful smile on your face!

dear bits and jack,
mama sure has been loving our time spent in your little fireside salon…
never tire of it…
of your asking “please” to do my hairs…
of your scooting right off to gather all of your “tools”…
of your styling…and snapshots…and starting all over…
of your little fingers running and running right through my hairs…
and i’m just altogether content to just sit there…and sit there…for as long as you’ll take…
‘till my back is all achy…and my legs are both sleeping…and my head is numb some…
for just as long as you’ll stay…
and as i’ve sat there…i’ve thought…
about how much i’ll miss this…come spring…when the fireplace goes cold for a season and your little fingers stop running…
and…
about how very much i’ll miss all of this…come just a too-short time from now…when my whole season of little fingers is through…
but…then…
the thought…
how…then…
maybe…your little people’s little fingers!
and…
oh, how wonderful that thought!
oh, how…just too wonderful…that would be!
then…
but for now…i’m utterly altogether content to sit…just right here…for just as long as you’ll stay…

you staying up into the wee hours on christmas morning…knitting away on that sweet little cap for eian…
him tearing open the wrap…and just loving it right away!
him wanting so badly to just put it right on!
him just begging, “please, mama, please…may i wear my new cap!?!”
him wanting to just wear it and wear it all the rest of that day!
him just positively loving that sweet little cap you made for him!
that truly was just the very most fun!
